Basically in our backyard anyway. Just a short drive up the road from home is Butterfield Canyon. Hadn’t done any hiking over here before, but wanted to get out on a short hike to see these fall colors with Luna without making the nearly 1-hour drive over to and up Millcreek Canyon. This was Luna’s first time out on a trail and she loved it! We don’t do a ton of hiking. Honestly, I’d rather be riding mountain bikes on trails and taking the slow way. But, I’ve been wanting to get Luna out on some trails and she’s going to get me out on more trails – it was fun!
Getting there & the trail
Probably not on your list of “top 10 hikes in Utah”, but Butterfield Canyon is worth checking out if you live in the area. We headed up Butterfield Canyon at about 7 a.m. from the Daybreak area of South Jordan and were headed off on our hike about 20 minutes later. It’s a short trail, AllTrails says it’s a “Moderate” difficulty trail but I would say it’s an easy trail. Out and back is just over 4 miles and it was a quiet trail, while we were there anyway. Didn’t see a single person out there, nice to have the trails to ourselves and be able to let Luna off leash so she could move at her own pace.
It’s not Little or Big Cottonwood Canyon, or Millcreek Canyon, but hey, there were some pretty views over on this side of the valley! And we didn’t have to deal with any morning traffic to get there and back, win-win. This was Luna’s first time out on a trail and she’s already looking forward to more. I need to invest in some doggie hiking gear now
